SARBATI DEVI WOMEN’S COLLEGE was established in the year 1981 in this small but cosmopolitan town of RAJGANGPUR with the patronage of renowned philanthropist late Sri. PanalalAgrawal with a view to providing education to local girls in the name of his wife Sarbati Devi. But, now the College has grown into an important centre of learning for women catering to the needs of all categories of students of Sundargarh District as well as other parts of the state. The College was inaugurated by Sj. GangadharMohapatra, the then Minister, Education and Youth services, Govt. of Odisha on 18.10.1981 with Sj. Kishore Chandra Patel, the then Minister of State, Industries as guest of honour. Sj. HarmohanPattnaik, I.A.S., Collector and District Magistrate, Sundargarh was the first President and Sj. NandkishoreAgrawal, Industrialist, was the first General Secretary of the Managing Committee.

The College is situated in a tribal dominated area and most of the students are very poor in English. They mostly speak in local language. The mission of this institution is to improve speaking ability of the students in English so that they will prepare themselves to face different types of tests and interviews after graduation and will be able to make their livelihood.
The vision of the College since its establishment is to empower the girls by providing higher education. Most of the girls reading in this College are from rural background and from the poor families and most of them are tribals. They are 1st generation learners. Their parents are mostly illiterate. Hence, the institution helps these deprived lots to bring them out of ignorance and darkness and lead them to a bright future.
The Vision, Mission and clear foresight for a distant future to empower women of this under developed and under privileged tribal area of Sundargarh District in the state of Odishahas finally got a concrete shape after 37 years of establishment of this institution.
